- How is a word counted?
- Text is split on whitespace and empty pieces are dropped, so extra spaces and line breaks between words don't inflate the count.
- How is reading time worked out?
- Word count divided by 200 words a minute, a common average adult silent-reading speed, rounded up to the nearest minute (minimum 1 for any text).
- How is speaking time worked out?
- Word count divided by 130 words a minute, a typical spoken pace, rounded up the same way.
- How are sentences and paragraphs counted?
- Sentences end on a run of . ! or ? and paragraphs are separated by a blank line. Abbreviations like "e.g." will over-count sentences a little; there's no dictionary of exceptions.
